Frequently asked questions
Should I use UUID v4 or v7?
v7 starts with its creation time, so values increase over time — as a database primary key it inserts faster and fragments the index less than v4. Use v4 when you do not want to reveal when a record was created.
Can the generated UUIDs collide?
The chance is practically zero: a UUID v4 has 122 random bits, taken from the browser's cryptographically secure crypto.getRandomValues.
Does Laravel generate UUID v7?
Yes. Use Str::uuid7(); the HasUuids trait in Laravel 12 also creates UUID v7 primary keys.
